Scotland

Since starting in 1971, we have developed groups across Scotland as far afield as Invergordon and Arran, Oban and Dundee. We have nearly 600 volunteers, providing a regular outing for over 600 elderly people.

There are 4 staff-members in Scotland: Valerie Crookston - Executive Officer, Alan Michael - Highlands Development Officer, Joan Grant - Eastern Scotland Development Officer and Gillian MacGregor - Western Scotland Development Officer.

Partnerships are key to the successful growth and operation of Contact the Elderly groups and we manage relationships with many organisations or individuals for each group supported. These organisations refer elderly people and volunteers to us.

Scotland has an aging population; the number of people aged 75+ is set to rise by 75% by 2031. The challenges for Contact in Scotland are to secure sustainable funding, recruit appropriate volunteers in the areas where we need them to enable us to start new groups, and identify the most isolated elderly people who are most at risk of developing depression without the kind of support we provide.

The Big Lottery Fund, Lloyds TSB, Choose Life Fife, Triangle Trust and the Robertson Trust are major funders in Scotland and we have recently secured a significant grant from the Scottish Executive, that has enabled us to develop plans to create groups in some of the areas currently without them.
